Amit V. Masurkar was born and raised in Mumbai, where he still resides. He dropped out of an engineering course at Manipal Institute of Technology at the age of 20 to pursue filmmaking. He later acquired a BA degree in History from Mumbai University. Masurkar has written for sketch comedy shows and Bollywood films. His directorial debut, a USA-India coproduction, was the ultra-low-budget comedy, Sulemani Keeda, which became an indie sleeper hit. Newton is his second film.
